Pearls (2021~2024) is the allegory of the psychological experience of an individual in an environment where various socio-political discourses collide.
My project depicts imaginary pearl creatures. They are conceived based on the fact that pearls form when an irritant – usually a parasite – invades an oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, they secrete a fluid composed of the Nacre, known as the mother of pearl, to wrap the foreign organism. This process repeats until it forms a pearl out of the deposit of the nacreous layer. I found that the pearl formation process is analogous to how we internalize the experience of encountering unfamiliar cultures or communities. If we extend this idea to the macroscopic dimension, the pearl creatures also demonstrate the immune response that society operates to heterogeneous individuals.
In the series, pearl creatures transform their shape following the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary shifts in biological protein structures. The fact that protein changes in reaction to external stimuli and evolves into various life forms metaphorizes a malleable individual that cannot be reduced to a single definition but linked to numerous factors.
Series of Pearls was initiated as a way to sublimate my emotional experience as an Asian woman living in New York City when the city declared lockdown in 2020. As I observed the strengthened discriminatory national, cultural, and racial implications due to the pandemic, my project later developed into a reflection on the complex psychological landscape of a multicultural environment.
진주 (2021~2024)는 다양한 사회적, 문화적, 정치적 담론이 충돌하는 환경 속에서의 감정적 경험과 주체의 형성을 표현하는 알레고리이다.
진주 연작은 가상의 진주 생명체의 발전 과정을 묘사한다. 진주는 조개 속에 침입한 기생충 등의 이물질로부터 조개가 자신을 보호하기 위해 생성된다. 조개가 이물질로 간주한 생명체가 조개 내부로 침입했을때, 조개는 진주층 성분을 분비해 이물질을 감싸고, 이 과정이 반복되어 진주층으로 감싸진 이물질들이 퇴적되며 진주가 된다. 진주의 형성 과정에서 단서를 얻어 고안된 진주 생명체들은 다양한 사회문화적 맥락이 충돌하는 장소에서 그러한 경험을 내면화하며 자아를 형성한 주체를 은유한다. 이를 거시적인 차원으로 확장해 보면, 진주 생명체는 사회가 이질적인 개체에게 작동시키는 면역 반응에 대한 은유가 되기도 한다.
작업에 등장하는 진주 생명체들은 작은 진주와 같은 구슬이 각기 다른 패턴으로 직조된 형태로 구성되어 있는데, 이 구슬들은 진주층에 갖힌 이물질처럼 낯선 집단에 대한 기억 또는 타자화의 경험에 대한 기억들을 상징하고 이 구슬들이 서로 다른 모양과 배치로 직조된 점은 이러한 기억이 개인의 가치관에 따라 다양하게 맥락화 된다는 점을 나타낸다.
작업 속 진주 생명체들은 생물학적 단백질 구조의 1차, 2차, 3차, 4차 변화에 따라 그 형태를 변화시킨다. 단백질이 외부 자극에 반응하여 변화하고 다양한 생명의 형태로 진화한다는 점은 단일한 정의로 환원될 수 없으나 다양한 요인에 영향을 받아 유연하게 변하는 주체를 은유한다. 진주 연작은 다문화 환경 속에서 여러 사회, 정치, 문화적 환경에 연관되어 이러한 경험을 재조합하며 자신을 형성하는 주체의 정신적 경험을 시각화한다.
