Doi Kim Solo Exhibition: 자리 Locus

<자리 Locus (2024)> explores the nuanced senses surrounding one’s position in space and time. In genetics, a “gene locus” refers to a specific location on a chromosome where a particular gene or genetic marker is situated. Borrowing from this term, <자리 Locus (2024)> utilizes the geographical location of the exhibition space—in particular, its address (Seongbuk-dong 177-17, Seoul, South Korea) as a fixed point in a mapping system—to present an inductive exploration of unique information that makes up a subject through metaphorical and visual storytelling.

Stemming from an interest in evolution theory and the anatomy of sensory organs, <자리 Locus (2024)> seeks to shift the reading of our physical, socio-cultural, and political locations. Instead of viewing them as markers that exist on the continuous timeline of hegemonic history, the exhibition uses multi-layered allegories to illustrate how these identities comprise uniquely fixed and original components of who we are. To this end, the exhibition subverts the deterministic and deductive thinking that underlies socio-cultural standards and norms prevalent in modern genetic discourse, which drove the imperialistic framework represented by Eugenics, by paradoxically employing the concept of gene locus.

김도이 개인전: 자리 Locus
<자리 Locus (2024)>는 각자가 자리 잡고 있는 자신의 현재에 대한 섬세한 감각을 탐구한다. 유전학에서 유전자 자리(Gene Locus)는 특정 유전자나 유전 표지자가 위치한 염색체상의 특이적이고 고정된 위치를 말한다. <자리 Locus (2024)>는 ‘성북동 177-17’이라는 주소명 체계 안에 고정된 지점을 무대로 개체를 이루는 특이적인 정보에 대한 귀납적 탐구를 은유적이고 시각적인 스토리텔링으로 제시한다.

인간과 동식물의 진화 이론과 감각 기관의 해부학에 대한 관심에서 시작한 <자리 Locus (2024)>는 다층적인 알레고리를 통해 현재를 살아가는 우리의 신체적, 사회 문화적, 정치적 위치를 연속적인 사건 위에 존재하는 표지 (marker)가 아닌 각자가 특이적이고 고정된 자리 (locus)로 전환시키고자 한다.
