Pearls (2021~2023) consists of 12 paintings. The series embodies self or identity with biological and organic images reminiscent of visual materials in biology textbooks.In natural ecosystems, pearls are produced as a means of self-defense when irritants invade oysters, mussels, or clams. The stimulated shellfish secrete fluid that wraps around the foreign organism, forming a pearl. Based on this, I conceived imaginary pearl creatures and used them as a metaphor for an identity constructed in an environment of diverse collisions. In this context, Pearls (2021~2023) also demonstrates the immune response that society operates in response to heterogeneous individuals.
Series of Pearls was inspired by my experience as an Asian woman living in the United States when New York City declared a lockdown as COVID-19 began to prevail around the world. As the discriminatory national, cultural, and racial implications strengthened, fueled by the global pandemic, I started to explore how these experiences were involved in forming individual identities.
Pearl creatures in a series of pearls evolve following shifts in biological protein structures. The idea of using protein structures is derived from my physical experience in threatening situations. It is to think about the formation of the subject corporeally, avoiding defining it based on the cultural or social dimension and not simplifying the complexity of social identity and its formation process. Proteins change in reaction to external stimuli and evolve into various life forms. Hence, I used protein as a metaphor for a hopeful future: just as proteins can evolve to compose various life forms, the pearl series visualizes the possibility of emancipating social others from existing prejudice and examines what shapes our contemporary existence by deeply contemplating our social reality.
「진주 (Pearls)」 (2021~2023)는 사회적 타자로 간주되는 개인의 자아 혹은 정체성을 생물학 교과서에 실린 시각 자료들을 연상케하는 생체적이고 유기체적인 이미지들로 형상화한 작업이다.
진주는 조개 속에 침입한 기생충 등의 이물질로부터 자신을 보호하기 위한 반응을 통해 형성된다. 조개가 이물질로 간주한 생명체가 조개 내부로 침입했을때, 조개는 진주층 성분을 분비해 이물질을 감싸고, 이렇게 진주층으로 감싸진 이물질은 퇴적되어 진주가 된다. 이렇듯 이물질을 억압하여 가두는 진주의 형성 과정은 사회가 이질적 타자를 배척하는 방법을 닮아 있기도 하고 뉴욕과 같이 다양한 사회 문화적, 인종적 정체성들이 충돌하는 환경 속에서의 자아의 형성 과정을 닮아 있기도 하다. 나는 이처럼 사회의 면역반응을 일으키는 단초이기도 한 사회적 타자들 개인의 정체성을 가상의 진주 생명체를 통해 표현하였다. 작업에 등장하는 진주 생명체들은 각기 다른 패턴으로 직조된 작은 진주와 같은 구슬의 형태로 구성되어 있는데, 이 구슬들은 진주층에 갖힌 기생충처럼 나와 다른 집단에 대한 기억 또는 타자화의 경험에 대한 기억들을 상징하고 이 구슬들을 각 진주 생명체마다 다른 모양과 배치로 구성하는 거미줄 같은 망은 이 기억들이 개인의 가치관에 따라 다양하게 맥락화 된다는 점을 시각화한다.
작품 속 진주 생명체는 이후 단백질의 합성 구조를 따라 더욱 활동적인 물질로 재구성된다. 진주 연작은 진주의 특질을 바탕으로 고안된 가상의 생명체가 단백질의 1차, 2차, 3차, 4차 구조를 따라 형태를 변형하고 서로 얽히는 모습을 묘사한다. 외부 자극에 빠르게 반응하여 합성되는 단백질은 물리적인 위협에 대한 나의 신체적 반응과 같은 ‘경험의 신체성’에 대한 비유로서 차용되었는데, 이는 이질적인 문화나 공동체에 대한 경험을 내면화한 주체의 형성을 최대한 몸의 차원에서 사유하기 위해 그러한 주체와 형성과정이 지닌 신체성과 복잡성을 은유한다. 다른 한 편으로 단백질은 변화를 통한 희망적인 미래를 은유한다. 단백질이 다양한 형태의 생명체로 진화하는 것 처럼 나의 작업 「진주 (Pearls)」는 사회적 타자의 정체성에 대한 깊은 사유를 통해 그들을 기존의 사회적 편견에서 탈출시켜 사회 속에서 다양한 형태로 공존해나가는 가능성을 시사하고자 했다.
